Maintaining not only the visual appeal of the flooring throughout your facility is great, but is the floor truly clean? a recent study performed* on flooring throughout hospitals used swabs on over 120 sites throughout a hospital environment in a Cleveland-area hospital. The bacteria they found has become some of the hospital-acquired infections (HCI's) that can cause life-threatening problems for hospital patients and employees.

The bacteria they found included:

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) leading to skin infections, bloodstream infections and pneumonia that is resistant to most common antibiotics was present on 22% of swabs.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) causing urinary tract infections and wound infections, also resistant to common antibiotics was present on 33% of flooring swabs.

Clostridium difficile (C. diff) that causes severe diarrhea that can lead to life threatening problems was present on 72% of floor swabs. Most notably, in the isolation rooms where known C. diff patients were housed the infection was present, but also in rooms where there were no known cases of C. diff, showing the spread of the infection and its ability to survive on the floor.

24% of high touch objects in contact with the floor were contaminated with more than one bacterium.

57% of the objects in contact with the floor transferred the bacteria to the hands.

Microbes cant fly, but they can float around in the air and have the ability to get in contact with someone, causing infections. Overlooking the highest-touch surface in the facility is something that can not go ignored. What is the largest horizontal high-touch surface in a building that is touched by everyone but ignored by most people? What is the largest contributor to indoor air quality that is a repository for all types of microscopic stuff and other stuff we can clearly see, like hair, dirt, and pollen?

THE FLOOR -

Floors are the largest horizontal surface in a building. When we sneeze or cough, those particles are ultimately ending up on the floor. All the dust in the air eventually settles on the floor. The microbes that are mold spores that eventually can cause mold growth will end up on the floor. Within the cracks and crevices the floors are filled with these contaminants.

The carpet is the largest filter in the building; the carpet collects everything that is in the air and on peoples shoes and gets trapped within its fibers and padding. Remove a carpet that has been in place for years and you can see the amount of dirt and grime comes out of the carpet. In areas around entrances, the amount of dirt and grime will be greatly increased. Areas that are moisture prone such as bathrooms and kitchens are havens for bio-nesting of mold and bacteria.

Here is the process of how floors affect our health:

Step 1: Infected person sneezes that produce droplets containing bacteria or viruses that land on the floor

Step 2: Someone walks on the floor and the virus or bacteria is transferred on to their shoes, virus and bacteria spreads throughout the facility. While walking, the virus or bacteria is aerosolized back into the air.

Step 3: Person returns home, further spreading the virus.

Step 4: Person takes off their shoes, virus or bacteria is transferred to their hands.

Validating a GMP Process

Some of the oldest guidelines on GMP cleaning from 1963 state that 'Equipment shall be maintained in a clean and orderly manner' Over the years as regulation has changed, the FDA has remained constant on this, it is the pillar of any cleaning program in effect today throughout GMP manufacturing sites.

In 1988, a case that greatly raised the awareness of this was when cross contamination from inadequate cleaning procedures of a recalled finished drug product, Cholestyramine Resin USP. The product had been contaminated with low levels of intermediates and degradants from the production of agricultural pesticides.
